Wildlife Photojournalist: Documenting The” Sloth Lady of Suriname”
This photo story is part of Kindred Guardians, a long-term series documenting the inspiring efforts of individuals dedicated to animal welfare and wildlife conservation. This segment shines a light on Monique Pool, a CNN Hero affectionately known as "The Sloth Lady of Suriname," whose tireless work has significantly impacted sloth conservation in Suriname, one of the most forested countries in the world.
Monique Pool’s Transformative Work in Sloth Conservation
In 2005, Monique Pool founded the Green Heritage Fund Suriname to protect sloths and other local wildlife. What began as a personal mission to rescue a missing dog led Pool to become the go-to expert for sloths in distress. Without formal training, she has dedicated her life to rescuing, rehabilitating, and relocating over 1,000 sloths, often with the help of volunteers.
Her work gained international recognition during an event she calls "Slothageddon"—a rescue operation that involved saving 141 sloths and over 40 other animals displaced by urban development. Many of these animals temporarily resided in her own home, a testament to her unwavering commitment to wildlife.
The Challenges of Sloth Conservation
Deforestation and climate change are among the most pressing threats to sloths in Suriname. Urban expansion, illegal gold mining, and droughts resulting from climate change have led to dehydration and abandonment, putting immense strain on these slow-moving creatures. Despite these challenges, Pool remains optimistic about the future, emphasizing the importance of preserving Suriname's lush forests.
"Suriname is the most forested country in the world and incredibly beautiful. If we can conserve it, we have the opportunity to set an example for the rest of the world," Pool states, voicing her hope for global conservation efforts.
